Whether you’ve been to the Garden Isle before or this is your very first time visiting, there’s always something magical and undiscovered waiting for you. As we’ve talked to visitors over the years, one of the biggest things we’ve noticed is how often people tend to overextend themselves. Worried they’ll never get another chance to visit, they feel like they have to see everything at once. That turns your vacation to paradise into a logistical headache that leaves you tired and in need of a vacation from your vacation.
That’s why we’ve put together a perfect 7-day Kauai itinerary that’s built around leisure while still fitting in the most famous parts of the island (and some best-kept secrets). With this plan, you’ll see iconic sites, eat exceptional food, have plenty of relaxation, and get a true island experience. You can follow it to the T or pair it with some of the activities in our 5-day Kauai itinerary to build a fully custom plan. And if you have any questions while you’re here, our Suite Paradise team is never more than a call away!

Day 1: Arrival, Settle In, First Poipu Sunset

After landing at Lihue Airport, you’ll probably be hungry. Most flights from the mainland US land in early to late afternoon, so after you’ve grabbed your bags and rented your car, head to Kauai Sushi Station just a few minutes from the airport and enjoy delicious, fresh rolls, nigiri, sashimi, and more.
After your meal, you can cross the street to Costco and pick up anything you’ll need for your week-long stay before continuing on to Poipu Beach and your resort.
Once you arrive, take a moment to unpack and settle in. If you’ve booked directly with Suite Paradise, now is the perfect time to pop open your complimentary bottle of wine. Pour a glass, step out onto the lanai, and breathe in the fragrant breeze of island flowers and salt air.
Take some time to explore the resort grounds—walk the paths, find the nearest beach access, and get your bearings. By this time, it’s probably nearing the end of the day, so head to Poipu Beach for your first sunset. This stretch of coastline is one of the best spots for clear skies and picture-perfect views.
After the sun slips below the horizon, it’s time for dinner. We recommend Brennecke’s Beach Broiler. The Beach Burger, Ono Fish and Chips, or Short Rib Loco Moco are all exceptional options. Pair it with a classic Hawaiian cocktail and enjoy the views of Poipu Beach.
Day 2: Beach Day at Poipu

On your first full day, you’ll want the classic Hawaii experience, so that means heading to the beach. Start the day with a surf lesson from Hawaiian Style Surfing. They offer group, semi-private, and private lessons. Most last around an hour and a half, during which time you’ll practice popping up and balancing on shore before heading into the water, where your instructor will help you catch your first wave!
After your lesson, you can continue practicing or spend the rest of the day lounging in the sun. Pack a cooler with drinks and snacks, bring your latest beach-read, and don’t forget the reef-safe sunscreen—you don’t want to ruin the rest of your trip with a sunburn.
When you’re ready to rinse off the sand, you can keep the relaxing vibes going with a stop at your resort’s pool before heading to your rental to shower and ease into the end of the day.
For tonight’s dinner, take advantage of your fully equipped kitchen and whip up a tasty meal to enjoy on the lanai. A day in the sun can really wipe your energy, and you’ll want to be fully rested for day 3, so don’t overdo it. After dinner, watch a movie and then head to bed so you can get a good night’s sleep.
Day 3: Waimea Canyon and Koke’e State Park

Today, we’re going to explore the west side of the island. You’ll want a bit of an early start for this one, so grab breakfast on the way. Mama Bear’s Kitchen food truck opens at 7 AM and has to-die-for breakfast burritos and cold brew.
Once you’re fueled up, it’s time to check out the Grand Canyon of the Pacific: Waimea Canyon. You can opt for a scenic drive or hop out and hit the trails. The Waipoo Falls Trail, Lliau Nature Loop, and Cliff Trail are popular options spanning both Waimea Canyon and Koke’e State Park (just 10 minutes away).

Day 4: Napali Coast by Air or Sea

The Napali Coast is one of the most iconic landscapes in the Hawaiian Islands and there are really only two ways to fully experience it: by helicopter or by boat tour.
Option 1: Helicopter Tour
With Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tours, you can fly deep into the ravines and crannies, getting up close to waterfalls and seeing the vast rainforest that’s unreachable by car or boat. It’s a birds-eye view that packs a bit of heart-racing thrills.
Option 2: Sunset Dinner Cruise
Capt. Andy’s Sunset Dinner Cruise takes you out on a gorgeous catamaran complete with cocktails and a four-course dinner as you sail past the stunning cliffs of the Napali Coast. You’ll capture incredible photos and make wonderful memories. If you’re here for a special occasion – perhaps to pop an important question, this is one of the most romantic ways to do it!
Either of these options will take up a fair chunk of the day, so plan for the evening to be casual either back at your resort, by the pool, or strolling the shore of Shipwreck or Poipu Beach.
Day 5: Hiking the South Shore

We’ve explored the canyon; now it’s time to get those impeccable coastal views with a visit to the Poipu Cliffs + Mahaulepu Heritage Trail. This out-and-back trail follows the coastline, with wide open views and fewer crowds than some of the more well-known hikes on the island. It’s a great spot to take your time, stop for photos, and enjoy a quieter side of Kauai.
After your hike, grab lunch nearby at one of these top spots:
- Puka Dog – a fun, quick stop with local-style hot dogs
- Kauai Poke Co. – fresh, customizable poke bowls
After a few busy days, we’ve left the afternoon mostly open. It’s a great chance to visit local farmers’ markets or shops to find souvenirs, check out places like Allerton Garden, or post up at a local bar for happy hour snacks.
Day 6: Wailua Falls and a Classic Luau

On your last full-day, let’s visit the east side of the island. Start your morning with a trip to one of Kauai’s most accessible waterfalls: Wailua Falls. You can drive right up to the viewpoint, making it a great stop that won’t require a long hike. If you can time it right after a rain shower, the twin falls should be in full force. Nearby, you’ll also pass through the Wailua River area, another lush part of the island worth seeing, even if it’s just from the road.
Find a light lunch at the Musubi Truck, where you can try fresh poke, chicken katsu, or OG Spam musubi. But remember to save room, because we’ve saved a main event for your last night—the Smith Family Luau.
Named the best luau on Kauai, this quintessential experience features traditional music, dancing, entertainment, and, of course, a full feast! Given its popularity, if this makes it onto your official itinerary, be sure to book your ticket well in advance; it’s often booked out for weeks. The show starts at 5 PM, so be sure to arrive early so you can easily park and get seated without feeling rushed.
Luau Schedule:
- 5 PM: Gather at Wailua River to receive your shell lei
- 6 PM: Meet the Smith family members and learn all about how to prepare a Kalua pig
- 6:15: Cocktails and Music
- 6:30 PM: Dinner time!
- 8 PM: Rhythm of Aloha Show
After this incredible show, head home for one last night in your Poipu resort.
Day 7: Coffee and One Final Beach Stroll

We hate to see a good time end, but as we reach our 7th day, it’s time to pack up and head back to reality. But before you leave, pay a visit to Little Fish Coffee for a refreshing Honey Nutmeg Latte (iced or hot) and the Shippy’s Bowl: acai topped with house-made granola, yogurt, bananas, pineapples, coconut, and condensed coconut milk drizzle—the perfect tropical finish to your 7-Day Kauai itinerary.
After breakfast, take one last walk through the peaceful resort grounds and spend a quiet moment on Poipu Beach, taking it all in. Then, it’s back to the room to grab your bags and hit the road back to the airport.
