POIPU BEACH NAMED ONE OF AMERICA'S TOP BEACHES
Poipu Beach Park won the prestigious top rating after examination of 650 beaches nationwide

POIPU BEACH, KAUAI----- In his annual rating of beaches found on United States coastlines and islands, Dr. Stephen Leatherman, aka "Dr. Beach," recently named Poipu Beach Park as the best beach in America. Leatherman's ratings come out in late May of each year. Leatherman has selected the nation's top beaches for the past 11 years. Criteria used to make his selections include 50 elements such as water color and quality, wave size, sand softness, current strength, lifeguard protection, scenic surroundings, visual obstructions and beach facilities.

Poipu Beach Park won the prestigious top rating after examination of 650 beaches nationwide. The popular beach park took the prize for golden coral sand on a crescent-shaped beach framed by crystal clear blue water and a mountain backdrop, according to Leatherman. Poipu Beach Park, owned by Kauai County, has received a lot of attention over the past few years, having been named by readers of Hawaii Magazine as the best family beach in Hawaii. The four-acre park fronts three swimming bays, is fully landscaped with lawns and shade trees, is handicap accessible and provides pavilions, showers, picnic tables, playground equipment, restrooms, extensive parking and a lifeguard.
